Despite finally earning that playoff home game the senior-laden Valencia girls basketball team had strived for, the Tigers still had to play away from their own gym.

That didn’t deter Valencia’s focus as the black and gold El Dorado High gym swelled with blue-and-gold cheers.

Valencia overcame an early deficit with hot 3-point shooting in its 57-66 win over Huntington Beach in a CIF-SS Division 1A first-round game on Saturday night.

“Better here than Huntington Beach,” Valencia coach Frank Lopez said.

Valencia (18-9) advances to play West Torrance in the second round. The home team will be decided by coin flip.

Huntington Beach (19-8) established its presence inside in the first quarter by posting up below the basket on offense and denying the lane to Valencia for a 12-4 lead.

“We couldn’t get anything done inside,” Lopez said, “so, we switched outside and the shots started falling.”

Sonia Bishara signaled the change for Valencia with a 3 at the first-quarter buzzer. Tiffany Chen and Krystal Khuat hit the next two 3-pointers to start the second and take a lead, 13-12, that the Tigers wouldn’t relinquish.

Valencia made four 3s in the second quarter and nine in the game.

The Tigers ramped up their pressure defense and didn’t allow the Oilers back into the game.

“They sped us up,” Huntington Beach coach Russell McClurg said. “We never made the adjustments we needed to. We did what they wanted us to do.”

Valencia outscored Huntington Beach, 24-12, in the second quarter for a 31-24 halftime lead.

“Once we get our pressure established, everything falls right into place,” Lopez said.

The Oilers did not get closer than eight points the rest of the game. Valencia’s lead grew to 18 late in the fourth quarter.

Bishara, a sophomore forward, led Valencia with 20 points and four 3-pointers.
