The Register’s All-County girls tennis team for the 2014 season.

FIRST TEAM ALL-COUNTY

KATIE TA

Capistrano Valley, Senior

The Register’s player of the year. Read about Ta.

YUKI ASAMI

University, Senior

The Trojans’ captain delivered a consistently great effort for Orange County’s top-ranked squad, making her third consecutive All-County first-team appearance. While normally heading University’s singles lineup, Asami won her third straight Pacific Coast League doubles title with Celine Gruaz. In her four-year career at University, Asami never lost a Pacific Coast League dual match (40-0). She has signed with the University of the Pacific.

CONSTANCE BRANSTINE

Villa Park, Junior

Branstine burst onto the scene when she became eligible for the Spartans at the start of Crestview League play in October. The five-star-rated junior finished the season with a 30-1 recrod, helping Villa Park capture its first league title in a decade. Her only loss came against the eventual CIF singles champ, Ena Shibahara of Peninsula, in the quarterfinals of CIF-SS Individuals. Branstine will be one of the county’s top returners in 2015.

SUMMER DVORAK

Laguna Beach, Senior

After moving back to the area from Utah this past year, Dvorak was stellar in her only season at Laguna Beach. In addition to leading the Breakers to the Division 2 semifinals and the quarters of the Southern California Regional tournament, the Vanderbilt commit finished second in the CIF Individual singles bracket. It was the highest finish ever for a Laguna Beach girls tennis player.

RACHEL KIM

Villa Park, Senior

Kim will go down as one of the best players in Villa Park’s history. She capped her illustrious high school career with a fourth consecutive league singles title in November, adding the first Crestview League crown to the three Century League titles she won (2011-13). The University of Chicago commit compiled a 52-3 record in her final high school campaign, advancing to the quarterfinals of CIF Individuals.

ALYSSA RUDIN

University, Junior

One local coach said early in the season that Rudin was one of the most improved players in the county. She was a stalwart in University’s deep single lineup. She finished third in the Pacific Coast League championships in November, and she will be one of the favorites to claim the coveted league crown next season.

DOUBLES TEAMS

RILEY GERDAU, Sr., and SIENA SHARF, Jr.

Corona del Mar

The Sea Kings’ top doubles tandem won upwards of 50 matches in what is widely regarded as one of the top leagues in the country. The CdM duo helped lead the second-ranked Sea Kings to a semifinals appearance in the Division 1 team finals and the Southern California Regional tournament. Gerdau and Sharf capped a successful campaign by qualifying for the round of 16 in CIF Individual play.

JUDY KAM, Jr., and CELINE GRUAZ, Sr.

University

What makes Kam and Gruaz great players is their versatility. Whether it was playing doubles or singles for University, both players produced points for a team that finished as the CIF Division 1 runner-up and advanced to the semifinals of the Southern California Regional tournament. Kam – a two-time All-County selection – will be one of the top returners for the Trojans in 2015. Gruaz – who was selected All-County the last three seasons – will continue her playing career at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
