Brant DeBoer and Patrick Horve both had less than 6 feet standing between them and a birdie on the par-4 18th on Tuesday at Tustin Ranch Golf Club.

The two Foothill players missed their putts on the low side, and carded a par instead. It was that kind of day on the greens for the Knights.

Brett Robinson, though, made the most of his birdie chances, carding a 2-under 34 on the back nine to earn medalist honors and lead Beckman (6-6) to a 202-207 nonleague victory against rival Foothill.

It’s hard to find two high school teams that know more about Tustin Ranch that these two as it’s the home course for both.

Tuesday’s match, though, was a bit more challenging than most for them. The tees were moved up, and a strong wind picked up in the afternoon, so club selection became a challenge.

“You saw that on the 18th. We had one guy go way long and fly the green,” Foothill coach Eric Horve said. “Then we had other that came up short and just missed landing in the water.”

John Viscounty led the Knights (6-6) with a 3-over 39. His teammates were all bunched in the low 40s, which has become a typical thing for Foothill, Horve said.

But the Knights are a bit young, having only three seniors, and course management had been a problem for the team, Horve.

“They are all trying to swing hard like Bubba (Watson), and they are having a hard time keeping the ball flight under control,” Horve said. “We can play much better. They are all capable of shooting in the 30s. We just haven’t been able to do it all at the same time. It is disappointing to lose this one.”
