Esperanza’s William Truong, who finished third in the shot put at the CIF State Track and Field Championships last month, is showing signs of progress after he suffered a broken neck in a trampoline accident three weeks ago.

After initially sustaining the injury, Troung had feeling in his arms but not in his legs, according to the school. Troung, who is now at Casa Colina Centers for Rehabilitation in Pomona, has gained some feeling in his legs and is going through daily physical therapy sessions, according to Esperanza throws coach Bill Pendleton.

“He’s coming along, it’s a long process,” Pendleton said. “It’s a marathon-type deal.”

Pendleton said Truong is able to move himself from his bed to his wheelchair. The left side of Truong’s body is coming along well. The right side of his body is also making strides, but a little slower because of the nature of the injury.

Truong has been able to stand and move with the help of a walking stand, according to Pendleton.

Truong, who just completed his senior year at Esperanza, was set to join the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in the fall.

A fundraiser website has been set up to help offset the cost of Truong’s surgeries and rehabilitation: www.youcaring.com/other/will-truong.
