Esperanza track standout William Truong showed improvement Wednesday following surgery on his broken neck.

“He was in good spirits,” Esperanza track coach Bill Pendleton said after visiting Truong in the hospital. The doctors “came in and tested him and he could feel them touching both feet, calves, thighs, etc. He was moving his left foot up and down.”

Truong, a senior, suffered a broken neck in a trampoline accident Monday, and he initially had no feeling in his legs, according to the school. He underwent surgery on his neck Tuesday, and he will undergo another surgical procedure Thursday.

“I think he’s getting better after the surgery,” Truong’s sister, Amanda, said. “He’s still Will. He’s still motivated. … He said he’s going to be better and stronger than he was before this.

“I’m really proud of my brother. I know he can get past this.”

Truong finished third in the state in the shot put on Saturday.
