LA MIRADA – The rain forced the two teams atop the Freeway League standings to delay their first meeting of the season until Monday night.

After 100 plus minutes of play, Troy and No. 4 Sunny Hills will have to wait a bit longer to break their deadlock.

Sunny Hills scored on an early corner kick and Troy pushed a goal through in the second half as the teams played to a draw, 1-1, in a league game at Biola University.

“It’s a tale of two styles of soccer,” Troy coach Michael Silzer said. “We’re trying to play a little more possession-based soccer. They’re a little more direct. So it was going to be a clash and see who was going to be on top, and it ended in a draw.”

In this edition of their long-standing rivalry, Sunny Hills (14-2-3, 2-0-1) and Troy (10-3-4, 2-0-1) sold out defensively and pushed up their respective flanks during two 10-minute overtime sessions but couldn’t get the golden goal.

“Both teams played really hard and really wanted it,” Sunny Hills coach Jeff Gordon said. “That’s why it’s such a great rivalry game. Troy brings out the best in us, and I think we bring out the best in them.”

The teams will play again, at Troy, next week.

Sunny Hills scored in the third minute off a left-side corner kick. Sierra Chhoeung crossed a ball to the far post, and Jocelyn Pineda converted off her torso for the lead, 1-0.

The Lancers controlled the pace through the first half, but Troy got behind their defense early in the second half.

Kristen Chong battled through two defenders in transition and got off a shot that was saved. Aaliyah Tu’ua moved in and scored on the rebound to level the score, 1-1, in the 54th minute.

Sunny Hills’ Monica Balos and Troy’s Sara Valencia each came up with crucial saves in the final minutes of regulation and in overtime.
