FULLERTON – Semir Shafi scored a game-high 24 points for Troy in a 54-44 win over Sunny Hills in a Freeway League game Friday night at Troy High.

The senior center was a dominant force in the paint, using a combination of great positioning and swift moves in the low post to collect 16 first-half points.

Ryan Mickle chipped in with 11 points for Troy (13-10, 4-2), including a pair of 3-pointers.

Sam Barrera paced the Lancers (11-11, 4-2) with 15 points, and Ryan Shaw finished with 12 points

Shafi and Aaron Yoo sparked the Warriors on defense with tremendous pressure that forced Sunny Hills into turnovers.

Barrera kept the Lancers in striking distance in the first half. With two consecutive baskets he cut their deficit to 17-13.

Barrera knocked down a runner to bring Sunny Hills within one point, but Troy responded with a 3-pointer by Ryan Murase that gave the Warriors a 28-24 edge.

Shafi ended the half by beating the buzzer with a putback basket that gave Troy a 30-24 halftime advantage.

The Warriors opened the second half by drilling back-to-back 3-pointers.

After calling a timeout, the Lancers went on a 6-0 run to cut Troy’s lead to 41-34. Shaw served as the offensive catalyst during that sequence.

The Lancers called a timeout with 3:19 remaining in the game and trailing by five. Troy’s Jared Reyes stole an inbound pass and fed the ball to Shafi, who was sprinting down the court and threw down an emphatic dunk, giving the Warriors a 49-42 lead.
