San Clemente rallies with late drive

SAN CLEMENTE- Center Evan Jacobsen’s first career touchdown carried San Clemente to a season-opening victory, 17-13, over El Camino of Oceanside on Friday night at San Clemente High.First-year quarterback Duke DeLancellotti and the Tritons offense took over at their 20, trailing 13-10, with 3:24 remaining in the game. El Camino had just taken the lead on a 49-yard touchdown run by Joseph Daris.
After a key third-down conversion, DeLancellotti connected with running back DJ Gallegos for a 28-yard pass to move the Tritons to the Wildcats 14. From there David Espino caught a screen pass and headed for the end zone.
The Wildcats jarred the ball loose before Espino crossed the goal line, but Jacobsen quickly pounced on the ball and skidded in for six, sending the overpacked San Clemente faithful into a frenzy.
“This is my 10th year of football and I’ve never scored before,” Jacobsen said. “I was blocking my guy and then I saw the ball and went for it.”
Tritons coach Eric Patton said afterward the coaching staff had been playing it conservative with DeLancellotti, but after his team fell behind, Patton had to open it up.
“It’s a great feeling to do what we worked on doing,” Patton said. “It’s exciting anytime you come from behind.”
The Tritons scored first on DeLancellotti’s 1-yard keeper and led 7-0 with 5:46 to play before intermission.
The Wildcats took advantage of a Tritons’ fumble deep in their territory and Casey Maluulu dove in from a yard out to even it at 7 in the third quarter.
The Tritons regained the lead, 10-7, on Aaron Jones’ 36-yard field goal later in the quarter.
Jones ended the Wildcats final drive with an interception.
