MISSION VIEJO – Capistrano Valley Christian took advantage early of Tri-City Christian of Vista’s trick-play miscues in a 37-12 nonleague victory at Capistrano Valley High on Saturday.

Things didn’t start out in CVC’s favor as Tri-City’s first two drives were lengthy, but Tri-City was held to only one touchdown and a 6-0 lead.

The game turned for CVC on the ensuing kickoff.

Tri-City’s onside-kick attempt went out of bounds and gave CVC the ball at midfield. KCI Thompson finished the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run, and CVC took a 7-6 lead.

Thompson had nine carries for 42 yards and two touchdowns.

Tri-City went four-and-out on the next drive with a failed fake punt attempt. CVC took over at Tri-City’s 36-yard line, and four plays later, Dawson Piper found Ben Sukut for a 7-yard touchdown pass.

Another fake punt attempt ended Tri-City’s ensuing possession, and Tri-City fumbled out of the end zone on its next drive for a safety and a 15-6 CVC lead.

On the next drive, Piper hit Daniel Herber on three consecutive passes to put CVC at the 5. Sukut caught his second touchdown pass of the night for a 22-6 lead.

CVC then took the conventional route as Piper hit Sukut in stride up the seam for a 67-yard TD pass and a 28-6 lead.

Piper finished 11-of-19 passing for 217 yards and three TD passes to Sukut. Sukut caught four passes total for 94 yards.

Late in the second quarter, CVC’s Nick Whelan caught an interception, but was pulled down from behind and injured on the runback. Whelan suffered a broken tibia and was carted off.
