Brea Olinda’s Austin Tamagno broke another record on the track this past weekend.

Competing in the Oxy Distance Carnival at Occidental College, the junior established a new county mark in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:46.94. It was the seventh fastest time in state history.

The junior broke the county mark of (3:50.2) that Edison’s Charlie Christiansen set in 1977.

Earlier this season, Tamagno set a school record in the 800. …

South Coast League teams swept the team titles in the second edition of the South County Classic at Mission Viejo.

Dana Hills (102.5 points) and Mission Viejo (74 points) topped St. John Bosco and Mater Dei in the boys meet. Mission Viejo dominated the girls meet, defeating runner-up Santa Margarita, 155-70.

Mission Viejo’s Kennedy Gillian, Taylor Arco and Olivia Teegarden combined to win four of the  eight events won by the Diablos. …

Joe Wiley served as an assistant coach for Brea Olinda’s cross country program in the fall, but now the track season has rolled around and he is the head coach of the distance program at Canyon.

Wiley was hired during the winter to replace Patrick Bendzick. The transition has gone more smoothly than Wiley anticipated.

“I was worried that it was going to be like having a stepdad,” Wiley said. “I thought it was going to be like ‘You’re not our coach; Bendzick’s our coach.”

Wiley said Bendzick, who remains at Canyon as the school’s athletic directory, has played an integral part in the transition.

“Part of it is just getting the kids to believe in you. He helped me out a lot with that,” Wiley said of Bendzick. “The transition has been way easier than I anticipated.”

The Canyon and Brea Olinda track teams square off Wednesday.
