Fryer: San Clemente's strong bond paying off

It can take a few games or a even few weeks for a team to develop a family feeling.

San Clemente already has it.

“The coolest thing is we’re showing great team chemistry,” San Clemente coach Dave Gellatly said. “These guys have grown up together and have played with each other a long time.”

The Tritons are happy guys so far. They won the Loara Tournament on Saturday, defeating Dana Hills, 5-4, in nine innings in the championship game.

Will Tribucher, the county player of the week, drove in the winning run in the final. Junior Brett O’Toole hit .462 in the tournament. Senior pitcher Kolby Allard was 2-0 and gave up no earned runs in seven innings, and junior Andre Pallante struck out 14 in 13 innings. Tribucher struck out 14 in eight innings.

Winning the Loara Tournament is a great way to start a season. Gellatly knows that it means little once Sea View League play begins later this month.

“It’s still one game at a time,” Gellatly said. “There’s a lot of work to be done.”

Around the horn in Orange County baseball:

• The first county media poll is out. The poll is produced by a panel of five media members who submit their top 10s at the conclusion of the previous week. A team gets 10 poll points if it is No. 1 on a panelist’s ballot, nine points if it is No. 2 on a ballot and so on down to one point for a team that is No. 10 on a ballot.

• On this week’s schedule: Huntington Beach at JSerra today in a doubleheader, 1 p.m.; JSerra at Cypress on Saturday in a doubleheader, noon; Ocean View at Orange, an early but important Golden West League game Wednesday; and Troy plays Fullerton in a Freeway League game on Thursday at Angel Stadium, which has opened its gates to some high school games the past couple of years.
