Fryer on basketball: Wrapping up a busy week
A look at Orange County basketball:
•Evan Zeller's week in the Irvine World News/Gary Raya Classic, which his Mission Viejo team won and for which he was tournament most valuable player: 35 points in the Diablos' 85-72 victory over South Coast League rival Tesoro in the championship game; 26 points against Temecula Valley; 23 points against Irvine; 27 points against Irvine; and 50 against University.
•Cypress' Jalen Hall was most valuable player of the Douglas Uselton Memorial Tournament, which Cypress won at Oxford Academy. Hall scored 23 points in the championship game, in which the Centurions defeated Brethren Christian, 68-45.
•Brethren Christian's 7-foot-5 senior Mamadou Ndiaye scored 18 points against Cypress, and scored 114 points over four tournament games. For the season, Ndiaye, who signed with UC Irvine, is averaging 26 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots a game.
•The JCTees.com North/South Challenge is an 11-game showcase event Friday and Saturday at El Toro High. The best-looking matchups of the four games Friday are Capistrano Valley-Brethren Christian at 5 p.m. and Tesoro-Ocean View at 8. Saturday's seven games include Laguna Beach-Corona del Mar at 12:30 p.m., Aliso Niguel-Fountain Valley at 3:30 p.m., and Mission Viejo-Canyon at 8 p.m.
•North/South Challenge admission prices for each day are $7 for adults, and $5 for high school students and for children ages 5 to 14. Children younger than 5 receive free admission.
•The Pacific Coast League-Sunset League Challenge today and Wednesday is a six-game event featuring, as the title suggests, PCL teams playing against Sunset teams. The schedule today at Huntington Beach High: University-Marina, 4:30 p.m.; Corona del Mar-Los Alamitos, 6 p.m.; and Woodbridge-Huntington Beach, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Irvine High; Edison-Beckman, 4:30 p.m.; Fountain Valley-Northwood, 6 p.m.; Newport Harbor-Irvine, 7:30 p.m. Admission prices are $7 for adults, $3 for students and is free for children ages 11 and younger.
•The Garden Grove Tournament, which started Monday and concludes Saturday, is an eight-team tournament, including Garden Grove League teams Garden Grove, Los Amigos, Rancho Alamitos and Santiago. Tournament games are at Century today and at Los Amigos on Wednesday.
•Mater Dei this week is playing in the Tarkanian Classic, a tournament in Las Vegas. The Monarchs play Ribet Academy of Los Angeles on Wednesday in a first-round game in the tournament's Platinum Bracket. They will play in the Orange Holiday Classic at Chapman University, Dec. 26-29.
•The Katella Klassic returns to the county's post-Christmas tournament schedule this season. The Klassic began in 1973 and continued for 35 years through 2007. This season's Klassic teams are Anaheim, Beckman, Fullerton, Irvine, Katella, Kennedy, Loara and Pacifica.
•The CIF-Southern Section released its boys and girls basketball preseason polls last week. The section's first regular-season poll will be out on Jan. 7.
