WESTMINSTER – Cole Kinder turned in a workman-like rushing performance and Newport Harbor dominated the line of scrimmage in a 60-35 Sunset League victory over Marina on Friday night at Westminster High.

The junior running back ran for 284 yards and three scores on 31 carries and added a 95-yard kickoff return for another touchdown.

Newport Harbor (4-5 overall, 2-2 league) used a balanced attack to gain control of the game in the first half.

The Sailors marched 80 yards on their opening drive, capped by Michael Bonds’ 17-yard touchdown pass to Reed Rutter.

Bonds finished with 196 yards and three touchdowns passing, and Rutter had six catches for 142 yards and a pair of scores.

Vinnie Bartolone caught Bonds’ other touchdown pass – an 18-yarder that extended the lead to 14-0 with 3:08 left in the first quarter.

Marina (1-8, 0-4) trimed the lead to 14-7 when Cooper Malerstein’s 2-yard touchdown run capped a nine-play drive. Malerstein led the Vikings with 153 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns.

Marina quarterback Anthony De La Torre capped another scoring drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.

De La Torre struck again in the third quarter when he found Noah Holmes on a 40-yard touchdown pass that cut Newport Harbor’s lead to 35-21.

Any thoughts of a comeback were dashed when Roger Sanborn took the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown with 1:03 left in the third quarter.
