COSTA MESA – Patrick Glasgow threw three touchdown passes and ran for another, and the defense made big plays for Calvary Chapel in a 40-7 win over Sage Hill in the season opener for both Thursday at Estancia High.
Nose guard David Andrade recovered two fumbles for the Eagles. Josh Debemarde had an interception and scored on an 80-yard pass.
Braden Stack scored three touchdowns for Calvary Chapel. He scored the game’s first touchdown on a 17-yard run, and later scored on receptions of 5 and 13 yards.
Stack’s touchdown run, followed by a missed point-after kick, made it 6-0 going into the second quarter. Glasgow scored early in the second quarter on a 50-yard touchdown run. A pass for two points was complete, but the receiver was tackled short of the end zone, leaving the Eagles with a 12-0 advantage.
Calvary Chapel scored again, quickly, when Debemarde took a short pass from Glasgow and turned it into an 80-yard touchdown play. Josh Koth’s kick was good for a 19-0 lead.
Sage Hill scored its touchdown in the second quarter on a 71-yard touchdown pass play from Caden Sheetz to Jacob Copeland to make it 19-7.
Calvary Chapel pushed the lead to 27-7 with 5:13 to go in the half on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Glasgow to Stack.
Stack’s second touchdown catch, this one covering 13 yards, late in the third quarter crated a 34-7 lead. Daniel Nava’s 6-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter completed the scoring and provided the final 40-7 score.
Glasgow completed 15 of 33 passes for 237 yards. He connected with six different receivers. Stack had five receptions for 38 yards and rushed for 49 yards.
Season openers often are not among the smoother games of the season. Calvary Chapel was penalized 12 times for 110 yard. Five of the penalties were person fouls and 60 of those penalty yards were assessed in the first quarter.
The penalties and the team’s pass-heavy offenses made for a long game. It took 1 hour and 25 minutes to play the 24-minute first half.
Calvary Chapel beat Sage Hill last year, 42-7. The teams have met in their season openers four years in a two. Calvary Chapel has won all four games.
Calvary Chapel, which finished 5-6 last year, plays host to Bassett of La Puente next Friday at Estancia High. The Eagles play in the Orange Coast League.
Sage Hill, an Academy League team, was 3-7 in 2014. The Lightning plays at its on-campus stadium next Friday against Fairmont Prep.
