LONG BEACH – Capistrano Valley senior Adam Gordon led the way for the Cougars in their season-opening victory over Long Beach Jordan, 37-7, in a nonleague game Friday night at Jordan High.

Gordon, a starter at receiver and cornerback, caught four passes for 62 yards and one touchdown and had a pair of interceptions.

Cougars quarterback Gavin Pruett completed 14 of 31 passes for 162 yards with three touchdown passes and one interception.

His 28-yard touchdown pass to Gordon on a fourth-down play gave Capistrano Valley an early lead, and the Cougar defense held the Panthers (0-1) in check for most of the night.

On offense, the Panthers were unable to gain momentum for much of the game and were held to just 205 yards of total offense with four turnovers.

Trailing, 14-0, in the second quarter, Panthers receiver Jordan Kelly ripped off an 88-yard touchdown run to give the team a spark. The Cougars responded with a field goal from Gordon for a 17-7 lead at halftime.

The Cougars’ offense erupted in the second half. Running back Jordan Bocko rushed for 102 yards and one touchdown, and Billy Biehn added 59 yards on the ground.

Wide receiver Trevor Wise caught five passes for 48 yards and scored the team’s second touchdown of the night.

Brandon Landham scored for the Cougars on a 28-yard pass from Pruett.
