El Toro piled onto the bus at Woodbridge and the players made teary promises to each other that 2008 would be different. They just didn't think it would be this different.

"I'm still kind of in shock," junior outside hitter Christina Bauch said.

"It feels kind of unreal," added senior Liz Harden.

"We were prepared to go five games," senior Sasha Kornilova said.

They only went three. The host Chargers defeated No. 7 Woodbridge, 25-13, 25-22, 26-24.

Bauch led with 12 kills and Kornilova had eight. Harden added 10 digs and senior Katie Cardoza had 31 assists.

"We've been preparing for this all summer," Bauch said. "We had such passion, such motivation to beat them."

The Warriors and Chargers tied for the Sea View League title in 2006, and Woodbridge won it outright last season, after sweeping El Toro.

"We picked the worst time to play our worst match," said Warriors coach Donnie Rafter, who credited El Toro for its efficient passing. The Warriors hit their first four serves into the net, and "from there it just went downhill," Rafter said.

El Toro (14-6) has won all three of its league matches, while Woodbridge (9-4) dropped to 2-1. They'll meet in Irvine on Oct. 30.

"I think both teams were nervous, and they were a little more nervous than we were," El Toro coach Brian David said. "I'm sure when we go over to their place it will be a much tougher match."

In other volleyball:

No. 4 Santa Margarita 3, No. 1 Orange Lutheran 0: The Eagles snapped the Lancers' 21-match win streak and moved to the top of the Trinity League, after sweeping 25-19, 25-23, 25-20.

"This might be the best thing for us," Lancers coach Marc Laulhere said via e-mail. "We have been on such a high for so long, you knew we would eventually hit a speed bump. I personally believe we will rebound and learn and get better."
