LA HABRA – The calendar says August and the schedule says opening game.

El Toro looked like a team playing its seventh game in October.

The Chargers rolled to a 51-35 win over La Habra in the season opener for both at La Habra High.

Trey Tinsley threw for 243 yards and four touchdowns. Tinsley, a 6-foot-3 senior, completed 29 of 45 passes.

Marcus DeSantis rushed for 219 yards on 18 carries. He scored on two long runs, one covering 66 yards and another covering 55, and on a 1-yard dive.

Tinsley spread the ball around. Colin Kentros had eight receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown, Taylor Dodds had eight catches for 71 yards and two touchdowns and Kaleb Fossum had six receptions for 50 yards.

La Habra quarterback Eric Barriere completed 12 of 30 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns. He ran for 135 yards and a touchdown.

El Toro lost to La Habra, 26-3, in last year’s season opener. The difference between the 2013 Chargers and the ’14 brand is simple, said Tinsley who started last season.

“We’ve got more experience,” he said. “I think we’re more confident. We lost Dominic Collins (All-County receiver last year) and that was a huge loss to our offense.

“But we have four guys back who were in the mix last year. Three guys on the offensive line are back. Last year, we had five guys on defense who’d never played football before and they’re all back.”

Both teams ran no-huddle offenses. The pace was hectic; the first quarter had 41 plays.

La Habra had a 10-point lead in the first quarter. El Toro took a 16-13 lead on a DeSantis’ 66-yard run and Barriere came right back with a 38-yard touchdown run.

El Toro took the lead for good, 22-19, on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Tinsley to Dodds.

The play that pretty much secured the win for El Toro came on the second half-opening kickoff received by the Highlanders. El Toro’s Gio Pavon recoverd at the La Habra 11, and four plays later DeSantis scored on his 1-yard run to make it 37-19.

El Toro was is No. 12 and La Habra is No. 11 in the county preseason rankings.

La Habra, 10-2 last year, plays South Hills of West Covina next Friday at Covina District Stadium. El Toro, 4-6 in 2013, plays host to Capistrano Valley next Friday.
