MISSION VIEJO – The track and field season has reached the point where most athletes are starting to hit their stride and round into form.

One girl who is peaking at the right time is Los Alamitos’ Sara Limp. The junior was ranked fourth in both the 100 and 200 meters entering Saturday.

Limp’s performance at the CIF-SS Division 1 Prelims at Trabuco Hills High helped her climb the county rankings.

Limp ran wind-legal times of 12.00 in the 100, and 24.42 in the 200. Both of those marks put her atop of the county in each event this season.

“I got a good start (in the 100),” Limp said. “It feels pretty good (to have the county’s best time). I just have to get ready for finals now.”

In the girls 1,600-meter relay, Dana Hills’ team of Kimiko Tanaka, Michaela King, Chloe Deol, and Brenna McNulty had the fastest qualifying time for CIF finals with a 3:50.53.

Huntington Beach’s Cassie Durgy qualified for the finals with a 2:14.65, third fastest time of the day.

On the boys side, the Griffins enjoyed a good performance from Tyler Rios, who qualified in the 110-meter hurdles with the ninth-fastest mark and best time in the county, 14.62.

Rios also qualified in the 300 hurdles when he won his heat in 38.61.

“My times are dropping every meet,” Rios said. “It’s a good time to be peaking.”

Edison’s Eamon Smythe, who has the second fastest time in the county in the 800 this year, ran a 1:54.71 in the event on Saturday, which was the fastest time in qualifying.

“I feel like I’m ready,” Smythe said about CIF finals next week. “I know that I can do well, and I’m just ready for state. I’ve been looking forward to it since the beginning of April.”

Huntington Beach’s George Gleason tore a muscle in his quadriceps earlier this year, and is now regaining his form, which was evident in the boys 1,600.

Gleason earned a spot in next week’s finals when he ran a 4:19.37.

“I was injured all year,” Gleason said. “I didn’t even think I had a chance of making it here, let alone running this season … my teammates were there to push me.”

In field events, San Clemente’s Rocky Fenton recorded the best qualifying mark in the discus with a mark of 173 feet, 9 inches.

Dana Hills’ Ella Hampson had the best mark in girls pole vault with a 10-09.
