Northwood wraps up PCL crown

IRVINE - The Northwood student section knew what was on the line, and with the final seconds ticking down they chanted in unison, "League champs! League champs!"

Even with one game left in the regular season, the Northwood boy's basketball team secured the Pacific Coast League title, defeating Corona del Mar, 62-53, Thursday from Northwood High.

Things weren't easy at all for the Timberwolves (20-5, 9-0) who seemed to come out flat against an energetic Sea Kings (17-9, 7-2) team who were trying to make the PCL standings all even.

Seniors Blake Grable and Max Stone got going early for the Sea Kings who led 14-7 after the first period. Grable scored seven points in the opening period, and Stone scored four, but Stone picked up two quick fouls and didn't play in the second period. Center Kevin Manchester also picked up two fouls and was forced out of the game.

When Stone went out, the Timberwolves got back to playing their style of basketball.

"We play like an Ivy league school. We play smart and hard and with our hearts and heads," coach Tim O'Brien said. "We play like such a team, and if you ask anyone that watches us I bet they enjoy the way we play."

The Timberwolves used a dribble drive offense that allowed for precise ball movement and the open man. Whether that be Kevin Norman, Cole Murray, or Zach Pierce it didn't matter.

Although the Timberwolves trailed by one at half, the momentum was in their favor.

A minute into the third, the Timberolves took the lead for good on a shot by Pierce. They closed the period up 45-37, and the Sea Kings were never able to get closer.

Norman (21 points), Murray (12 points) and Pierce (11 points) may be the sacoring leaders of the Timberwolves, but they also received good minutes from Fernando Rivas who played a lot of minutes due to Jake Ludwick being in foul trouble.

Grable had 19 in the loss while Stone finished with 11. Tyler Duncan was the next high man with seven.
