ANAHEIM – The Cypress baseball team rode hot pitching and a scorching offense to an 18-0 victory over Yorba Linda in a first-round game of the Loara Tournament at Dee Fee Field on Friday.

“It’s good to get some wins under the belt,” Cypress coach John Weber said. “Get some confidence. It’s nice for the kids.”

After the Centurions’ Dominic Fletcher worked his way around the bases and scored on an error in the top of the first, starter Garrett Brockel threw two strikeouts in the bottom of the first.

“Pitching sets the tone,” Weber said, “and fortunately for us, they made some mistakes and it kind of snowballed after that.”

Cypress (2-0) added three runs on four hits in the second inning with only one hit leaving the infield.

Yorba Linda (0-4) got its first two batters of the second to first and third before Brockel struck out three consecutive batters to end the inning.

Cypress added six runs in the fourth inning to secure the victory.

The first three batters reached base on singles to load the bases for Brockel. Brockel reached on a fielder’s choice and Ezele Wicks scored from third on an errant throw home for a 5-0 lead.

With the bases loaded and no outs, Brandon Alamo hit a ball to the deepest part of the field in right center for a three-run double. Isaiah Parra brought Alamo home with a double on the next pitch, giving Cypress a 9-0 lead.

Brockel earned the win as he allowed four hits in four innings and struck out seven.

Ryan McCanless went 3 for 4 with three RBI and one run scored. Jarren Duran went 2 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Alamo finished with three RBI. Anthony Marquez had two RBI.
