Westminster puts it away with 3-TD blitz

SPECIAL TO OCVARSITY.COM

SANTA ANA - Three touchdowns in a three-minute span of the second quarter helped keep Westminster atop the Golden West League with a 40-28 victory over host Saddleback on Thursday at Segerstrom High.

The Roadrunners (0-3 and 2-6) took a 14-13 lead midway through the second quarter. Westminster (3-0 and 5-3) came back on the ensuing drive with a seven-play, 78-yard march.

It ended with Jose Ortiz’s third TD run of the half, this one from 26 yards out.

After forcing a punt, Westminster needed just two plays before scoring again.

This one came on Nick Anderson’s 42-yard pass to Tarik Rayford, who made a leaping grab over two defenders at the 5 before scoring.

Carlos Ancona of the Lions returned a punt 47 yards through the heart of the Saddleback defense for a touchdown with 10 seconds left in the half.
