LAS FLORES – With its South Coast League schedule looming, including a match-up against No. 2 Mission Viejo next week, eighth-ranked Tesoro wanted a complete effort to close out its nonleague slate.

Instead, it struggled with mistakes in a loss.

Tesoro committed seven turnovers with three interceptions at the goal line and couldn’t overcome Notre Dame of Riverside in a 20-13 nonleague loss at Tesoro High.

“We were embarrassing, quite honestly,” Tesoro coach Matt Poston said. “That’s the only word that describes this performance. We didn’t play anywhere near how we’re capable.”

Tesoro (4-2), a Division 1 school, had the upper hand on paper against a Notre Dame team (3-2) that was ranked eighth in Division 9 and hadn’t played a full game in three weeks.

Notre Dame’s Sept. 9 game was stopped because of a brawl in the third quarter and was followed up with a bye and a forfeit due to suspensions from the fight.

“You don’t beat anybody with seven turnovers,” Poston said.

Tesoro got the early jump in the turnover battle with a fumble recovery by James Williams at the Notre Dame 11.

Tesoro came back with a double pass that was intercepted in the end zone.

Notre Dame cashed in almost immediately with an 83-yard touchdown bomb for the lead.

Tesoro responded on the next drive with a great call against Notre Dame’s hard-charging pass rush. Aaron Angelos floated a screen pass to Graeden Sharpe, who burst 28 yards for the touchdown.

Angelos replaced Chase Petersen, who was crushed on back-to-back plays and taken out with a bruised leg.

Tesoro looked in position to correct things and take the lead in the second quarter, but another interception in the end zone cancelled the threat.

Notre Dame turned around with a 79-yard run to set up the go-ahead field goal going into halftime, 10-7.

Tesoro’s second play of the second half resulted in a fumble at its own 27-yard line. Notre Dame capitalized with a 25-yard TD pass.

Tesoro’s defense kept it close but another red zone interception in the fourth quarter killed the comeback.
