OCVarsity preview for the 2015 season:
SANTA ANA SAINTS
Coach: Charlie TeGantvoort
Last season: 6-5 overall, 3-2 league
Scouting report: Coach Charlie TeGantvoort says the Saints “lack overall football experience,” but their defense should be much improved this season. Anthony Arellano returns at free safety. He led the team in 2014 with 73 tackles, 14 of which TeGantvoort said saved a touchdown. The Saints’ two best players, according to TeGantvoort, will be on offense. Twins John and Jorge Briseno combined to score 31 touchdowns last season. John Briseno, projected to be the starting quarterback, piled up 1,304 total yards last season. He’ll be handing the ball off to his brother Jorge, who finished with 1,618 total yards in 2014. Both players have been receiving interest from colleges, TeGantvoort said.
Bottom line: The Saints have three of the best athletes in the league in the Briseno brothers and Arellano, so they could be a serious threat to win the league title.
Players to watch: Anthony Arellano, FS, Sr.; Rafael Adalco, OLB, Sr.; John Briseno, QB, Jr.; Jorge Briseno, RB, Jr.; Oscar Cruz, T, Sr.; Steven Cruz, DE, Jr.; Angel Serrano, OLB, Sr.
