Courtney Mathewson (Canyon) and Laguna Beach senior Makenzie Fischer each scored three goals and Newport Harbor senior Carlee Kapana made eight saves as the U.S. women’s water polo team defeated Canada, 11-9, in the semifinals of the FINA Intercontinental Tournament in Auckland, New Zealand.
Ex-Corona del Mar standout Maddie Musselman added two goals and Kaleigh Gilchrist (Newport Harbor) had one.
Team USA will play Australia in the gold medal match.
The Americans also qualified for the FINA Super Final by reaching the medal round.
