WHITTIER – Zach Taylor looked as if he was simply running a passing drill on Friday. Pass after pass found his wide receivers in stride, allowing them to run free as Taylor racked up 517 yards passing to lead Buena Park to a 53-6 nonleague victory over California of Whittier on Friday night.

Taylor set the tone on the first Coyotes play from scrimmage when he connected with Max Rivera on a 60-yard scoring pass. After a Condors field goal, Taylor and Rivera connected again, this time on a 45-yard touchdown pass. Taylor then finished the first-quarter barrage with his legs, scoring on a 10-yard run to give Buena Park a 20-3 lead.

The second quarter was filled with more passing from Buena Park and a lot of big plays from wide receiver Jaylinn Hawkins. Hawkins had too much speed for California (1-1), and he showed it early in the second quarter when he ran past the defense for a 60-yard touchdown.

Late in the first half, Buena Park took over on its own 2-yard line and drove 98 yards for a score. Hawkins provided the highlight on that drive too, when Taylor, from his own 49-yard line, appeared to overthrow Hawkins before the receiver turned on the speed, made a leaping catch then managed to hold on to it as he fell to the ground.

Taylor connected with Hawkins for another touchdown early in the third quarter to push the lead to 39-6.

Hawkins finished with seven catches for 281 yards.
