TUSTIN – All of the hard work continues to pay off for the Trabuco Hills wrestling team.

The Mustangs captured the team title with 193 points and led the field with 10 individual medalists at the Asics Southern California Challenge at Tustin High on Saturday.

Trabuco Hills was ranked sixth in last week’s county top 10 poll.

“We knew we had the product that we had,” Coach Kurt Mitthof said. “We felt like we put in the hard work. Everyone says that, but we truly put in the hard work, a lot of offseason wrestling.

“We had everybody committed. We have a great group of seniors that have stuck together and are good leaders.”

One of those is Chandler Gryske, who earned Upper Weight MVP honors, winning three matches by fall and two by decision at 152 pounds.

Chris Hernandez (138) was the other champion for the Mustangs.

“Winning is contagious,” Mitthof said. “When you start winning, you have guys working hard in practice and they’re more motivated.”

Fountain Valley finished second (187), with El Modena (155.5) and Yorba Linda (133) also earning spots in the top five.

The Barons had seven medalists, including 160-pound champion Andrew Morgan.

Landon Kim (Mission Viejo, 145) was selected Lower Weight MVP.  Kim won two matches by fall, one by technical fall and two by decision.

At 106 pounds, Tustin’s Guillermo Avila and Santa Margarita’s Nathan Fier met for the third time. With the match tied at 2-2, Avila scored a takedown and a three-point near fall in the third period to pull off the the 7-2 victory.

Another rematch happened at 195 pounds between Capistrano Valley’s Phillip O’Shea and Woodbridge’s Emu Anaim. O’Shea defeated Anaim, 7-3 at the Mann Classic last month.

Saturday, Anaim exacted his revenge, narrowly escaping with a 3-1 victory.

Other county champions include: Nate Mabale (Cypress, 113), Luis Lepe (Buena Park, 126), Andrew Gomez (Yorba Linda, 132), Ryker Coppa (Marina, 170), Vicente Moreno (Santiago, 182), Jeff Holsinger (Santa Margarita, 220) and El Modena’s Fernando Aguilar (285).
