Boys basketball players Rex Pflueger of Mater Dei and Nick Pallas of Tesoro were suspended for two games each for playing in a charity basketball game in Compton over the weekend.

The violations were reported by, and suspensions decided by, Mater Dei and Tesoro according to CIF-Southern Section spokesman Thom Simmons.

According to CIF rule 600, “A student on a high school team becomes ineligible if the student competes in a contest on an ‘outside’ team, in the same sport, during the student’s high school season of sport.”

Pflueger, a starting senior guard, did not play in the Monarchs’ win Monday over Palm Desert. He will miss the Monarchs’ game at Servite on Friday. Pflueger scored 52 points last week over two games for Mater Dei.

Pallas, a starting senior forward, will miss Tesoro’s away games against Trabuco Hills on Wednesday and Capistrano Valley on Friday.

This past fall, several Southern California girls volleyball players were suspended under similar circumstances.

In 2012, Orange Lutheran basketball player Gabe York, now at Arizona, was suspended two games for playing a game on an older brother’s adult-league basketball team.
