South County Notes: Santa Margarita puts out big effort for charity
Notes, opinions and more about water polo, tennis, golf, volleyball and cross country in the southern region of the county.
The Santa Margarita boys cross country team used its running prowess to help better the lives of some people in need.
The team recently held its annual jog-a-thon, with all of the proceeds going to the Orangewood Children's Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping less fortunate kids throughout Orange County.
Through the participation of 18 athletes, who accumulated 114 miles of running at the event, and outside donations, the team earned $4,655, which was donated to the organization last week.
The jog-a-thon, which was initially started to help fund team expenses, has now raised nearly $25,000 in the last four years for various charitable organizations. Jason Eichelberger
STRONG EFFORT
San Clemente's girls volleyball team won its first varsity tournament since 2001 with a 25-18, 25-18, victory over Laguna Beach on Saturday night in the final of the Capistrano Valley Tournament.
I think conditioning paid off for us, Tritons coach Rob O'Rear said. We were up against bigger teams, and to win a tournament of this caliber, we had to play consistently. We hadn't demonstrated that yet.
The Tritons had three girls selected to the all-tournament team sophomore Molly Yoder, and seniors Erin Yoder and Shannon Ward.
Yoder, playing at libero and the cousin of Molly, was named the tournament's MVP.

TOUGH DOUBLE
El Toro's top-ranked boys water polo team (13-0) has captured the Villa Park Classic and South Coast Tournament the past two weekends.
That's a tough double, veteran El Toro coach Don Stoll said.
The Chargers and Stoll have only accomplished the double one other time: 1992. That fall, El Toro went 30-1 en route to the Division I title.
The Chargers' only loss came against old South Coast League rival Capistrano Valley in the North Orange County Tournament.
A hardship waiver request by water polo standout Trey Davis has been denied by the Southern Section, according to the organization's Web site.
Davis, a senior at Dana Hills, left JSerra last month. As a junior, he led the Lions with 96 goals. Davis is ineligible to play varsity at Dana Hills but could play JV, section spokesman Thom Simmons said in an e-mail.
On Saturday, JSerra (11-4) defeated Agoura, 14-7, to finish ninth at the Villa Park Classic. Dan Albano
DOMINATING EFFORT
Laguna Beach's girls tennis team defeated Godinez, 18-0, last week. Nearly everyone on the Breakers swept their matches and didn't allow the Grizzlies to win a game.
The lone exception was Laguna Beach's No. 2 doubles team, which allowed two points against Godinez's No. 1 team, 6-2.
This was the opening game of the Orange Coast League.
San Clemente (1-2) beat Tesoro, 12-6, last week. The Titans dominated the singles matchups, winning five of six games, but the Tritons controlled the match by winning eight of the 12 doubles games. ...
Santa Margarita (2-1) defeated Laguna Hills (1-2), 10-8, last week. This was a battle between two teams just outside the top 10 rankings. The Golden Hawks won six of the eight singles matches, while the Eagles handled their business by winning seven of the 10 doubles matches. Artie Casas
