North County Notes: Cypress good with low numbers

Notes, opinions and more about water polo, tennis, golf, volleyball and cross country in the northern region of the county.

The low scores keep coming for the Cypress girls golf team.

Twice last week the Centurions broke 200, and that included an impressive 188 on the front nine at Dad Miller Golf Course during a 106-stroke victory against Loara.

And then, two days later, the Centurions carded a 193 against Katella at Lakewood Golf Course. Kristina Nhim shot a 4-under 33 on the front nine that day. In four of their past six matches, the Centurions have posted a score in the 190s or lower.

“We have a very solid team, and we played very well that day (against Loara),” Cypress coach Doug Mitchell said. “I think another thing that has been motivating the team is where they are ranked (No. 2 in the county). They don't like it.”

The Centurions only had four birdies in the round against Loara. Their putting was a bit off, Mitchell said. Still, five players shot in the 30s. …

Stacy Kim posted three rounds in the 30s last week for Brea Olinda, including a 1-under 35 against Canyon at El Prado. The Wildcats lost that match, 216-227. However, Brea won the other two, defeating Tustin and El Dorado. – Damian Dottore

MORE BIG MATCHES

The big matches keep coming for Villa Park's surging boys water polo team.

On the heels of their shootout with top-ranked El Toro in the finals of the Villa Park Classic on Saturday night, the Spartans play host to an improved El Modena team on Tuesday in a Century League opener for each school. Both squads are 12-3.

“I'm not oblivious to the fact that they are doing really well,” Villa Park coach John Carcich said.

El Modena notched one of its biggest victories in years last week, 11-4 over San Clemente. Erich Schwamb had five goals and six steals.

Villa Park also is playing well. On the final day of the South Coast Tournament on Sept. 27, the Spartans beat Division II rivals Servite and Riverside Poly. – Dan Albano

TWO-WAY THREAT

It was a day of duel triumphs for the Esperanza boys and girls cross country teams this past Wednesday, as each team produced narrow victories at the Sunset League Preview meet at Central Park in Huntington Beach.

On the boys side, senior Steven Schnieders (15:47) and sophomore Elliott Myers (15:48) finished third and fourth, respectively, to lead the Aztecs' effort, as they edged second-place Newport Harbor, 27-28.

The girls meet was even closer, as the Aztecs and Sailors finished tied for first with 28 points. Esperanza won the tiebreaker because of a better finish between the schools' sixth runner. – Jason Eichelberger

PLAYING IT TOUGH

Newport Harbor's girls tennis team took advantage of a shorthanded Troy squad last week.

Troy played without Tseng Frances, its No. 1 singles player, and Allison Radde, its No. 1 doubles player.

Newport Harbor didn't squander the golden opportunity to defeat a ranked team.

“The bottom line, they were more aggressive and played the important points better than we did in a number of close doubles matches,” Troy coach Donna Judd said. – Artie Casas
