Central County Notes: League wars heat up (updated)
Notes, opinions and more about water polo, tennis, golf, volleyball and cross country in the central region of the county.
League races will heat up in several sports this week. Here is a look at some of the best games and matches on the schedule:
GIRLS TENNIS
No. 2 Corona del Mar at No. 3 University, Wednesday, 3 p.m.: This Pacific Coast League clash pits Corona del Mar's strength at doubles against University's power at singles. Corona del Mar showed its strength at doubles in a 12-6 victory against Peninsula last week. The teams of Karen Ishii-Kellie Feeley and Danielle Kaiden-Lindsay Zotovich each collected victories.
BOYS WATER POLO
(The date and time of the LosAl-Newport match has been updated 10/7)
No. 2 Los Alamitos at No. 5 Newport Harbor, Thursday, 7 p.m.: This is the Sunset League opener for each school, but it will likely have a major impact on seeding for the Division I playoffs. The defending champion Sailors (7-4) and Griffins (11-1) are the favorites for the league crown, which could yield a top-four seed in the division.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
No. 3 Newport Harbor at No. 2 Los Alamitos, Tuesday: This is another Sunset League opener, but unlike water polo, the league's girls volleyball teams play a double round. “If we lose, there's still a chance (for the league championship),” Newport coach Dan Glenn said.
Los Alamitos is 11-4; Newport Harbor 11-3. The Sailors hope to have senior jump-serve specialist Katie Lawler back from a sore rotator cuff. – Artie Casas, Dan Albano, Jonathan Kay
CONSISTENTLY LOW
Mater Dei has been one of the most consistent girls golf teams in the county, shooting no worse than 205 in its past three matches.
The No. 4 Monarchs carded a 204 when facing top-ranked Santa Margarita last week but lost by two strokes.
Desiree Debreuil and Victoria Nguyen both finished with 2-over 37s at Willowick to lead the Monarchs. – Damian Dottore
RUNNING HARD
Despite not enjoying team success at the Sunset League preview meet last week, two of the county's better distance runners turned in stellar efforts for Edison.
Junior Matt McElroy was the top overall finisher. McElroy, who was the runner-up at last season's league finals, won the race in a time of 15:28.
On the girls side, senior and defending league champion Hillary Hayes (18:14) was third overall. – Jason Eichelberger
SWIMMING STARS
Six county swimmers have been selected to the 2008-09 junior national teams. They are: Edison's Tom Shields (200 freestyle), Beckman's Charlie Rimkus (800, 1,500 free, 400 IM), Mater Dei's Melanie Klaren (200 free), Edison's Cindy Tran (100 back), Capistrano Valley's Sam Taylor (100 back) and Mater Dei's Melissa Bates (100 breast). – Dan Albano
