Beckman High assistant boys swimming coach Ed French, 58, died Thursday of complications from a stem-cell transplant, his son, Jake, said in an e-mail.

French's transplant was treatment for multiple myeloma, a type of cancer.

French worked closely the past two seasons with standout Charlie Rimkus. French also helped coach Beckman’s boys and girls water polo teams.

“His experience, his passion for them (aquatics sports), were tremendous,” Beckman aquatics coach Peter Muller said. “He loved the kids.”

French also was an assistant swim coach for the Irvine Novaquatics club from 1981-89. Among the swimmers he coached was Olympian Jason Lezak.

French is survived by his wife, Karen, daughters, Merrie and Harmony, and son, Jake.
