Outlook: Villa Park and Mission are in a CIF State boys basketball championship game for the first time. Villa Park defeated Colony of Ontario, 78-67, last week in the Southern California Regional Division III championship game. Villa Park had lost to Colony in the CIF-SS Division 2AA championship game earlier this month. The Spartans, champions of the North Hills League, in the regionals defeated Gardena, 71-63, in the first round, Carnegie of Riverside, 56-52, in the second round and Orange Glen of Escondido, 72-62, in overtime in the semifinals. Myles Franklin, a 6-foot-4 senior guard, is Villa Park’s leading scorer at 18 points a game. Senior 6-foot guard Caleb Banuelos averages 15 points a game, and Julien Franklin, a sophomore, averages 14 points a game. Mission has won 23 in a row. In the Northern California Division III Regionals, the Bears defeated San Marin, 63-40, in the first round, Foothill of Palo Cedro, 76-51, in the second round, St. Ignatius of San Francisco, 64-54, in the semifinals and Vanden of Fairfield, 72-68, in the regional championship game. Senior guard Niamey Harris leads the Bears with 16 points a game. Villa Park coach Kevin Reynolds said the Bears are similar to Colony. “They’re very pressure-oriented,” Reynolds said. “They might not be as talented as Colony offensively, but they’re all over you defensively.”
