Corey Okubo will graduate from University before the inaugural CIF State high school swimming and diving championships in 2015 but he likes the concept.

“I believe that a state meet is a great idea,” the senior said in an e-mail.

“It will make the already highly competitive CIF even more competitive. Also, the traveling up north as a team may also be a fun change.”

The state swimming and diving championships received final approval earlier this year from the state CIF Federated Council to begin in the spring of 2015.

The Federated Council approved the championships by a unanimous vote.

The meet will be held May 22-23, 2015 at a site to be determined, said Erin Davenport, a director with the CIF state office.

The state office has received interest from potential host sites and also has distributed bid inquires, Davenport said.

The state office hopes to have a host site determined by this spring, Davenport said.

Riverside and Clovis have been mentioned as potential host cities.

Riverside City College is set to play host to the Southern Section’s swimming and diving championships in May for the third consecutive season. The college’s complex features a main, 65-meter pool, diving tower and two 25-yard pools.

The inaugural state championships will coincide with the potential senior seasons of Ella Eastin of Crean Lutheran and Katie McLaughlin of Santa Margarita.

“It’s exciting,” Crean Lutheran coach Craig Brown said of the state championships.
