Outlook: Sonora got to last year’s 2A championship game in which the Raiders lost to Calabasas by 19 points. Plenty of this year’s Raiders were on last year’s team, including point guard Josh Rodriguez and Ben Rico. Rodriguez, a 5-foot-11 senior, is averaging 20 points and four assists a game. Rico, a 6-5 senior, is scoring 16 points a game. Christian Rhodes, a 5-11 senior, has been spectacular at times and is averaging 13 points a game. Steven Murphy, a 6-6 senior, gives the Raiders a strong presence inside. Sonora has won six in a row since losing to Orange Lutheran in the Nike Extravaganza. Sonora won CIF-SS boys basketball championships in 1971 and 1983. Mater Dei star girls basketball player Katie Lou Samuelson’s father Jon Samuelson was a star player on the ’83 Sonora team. The Raiders were seeded No. 1 in the division. Gahr was seeded No. 2. The Gladiators last won a CIF title in 2011. Gregory and Jeremy Carlyle, twin 5-11 senior guards, are averging 15 and 18 points respectively for Gahr.
