FIRST TEAM
Ryan Cheung, University, senior
2010 boys tennis player of the year
Denis Nguyen, Canyon, junior
The Comanches’ top singles player earned the Century League singles title and helped his team qualify for the Division 2 playoffs. Nguyen reached the finals in singles at the Ojai and advanced to the semifinals of the CIF-SS individual tournament. They were the only two losses this season.
Gage Brymer, University, freshman
A core member of University’s singles lineup, Brymer lost just two matches this season. He captured the Pacific Coast League’s singles title and reached the Round of 16 at the CIF-SS individual tournament. He also was the only Trojans player to go undefeated (8-0) at the All-American tournament.
Stefan Menichella, University, freshman
Menichella made his major contributions in singles this season, dropping just one match this season. He displayed his versatility by playing No. 1 doubles in University’s victory against Santa Barbara in the CIF-SS Division 1 championship match.
Kona Luu, University, junior
Luu was a key part of University’s doubles lineup and was part of the No. 1 team when the Trojans earned the CIF-SS Division 1 championship. He reached the finals in Ojai playing with Ryan Cheung. He showed his singles skills by making the Pacific Coast League finals and advancing to the Round of 16 in the CIF-SS individual tournament.
Shane Korber, Corona del Mar, junior
Korber made a case for the most improved player this season while playing No. 1 singles for the second-ranked team in the county. Korber reached the quarterfinals in doubles at The Ojai. He also claimed the Pacific Coast League doubles titles and advanced all the way to the doubles finals in the CIF-SS individual tournament playing with Ryan Peyton.
Ryan Peyton, Corona del Mar, senior
Peyton played No. 2 singles and was part of the 1-2 punch that helped the Sea Kings reach the semifinals of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs. Peyton made it to the Round of 16 at The Ojai before losing to the eventual champion. He also won the Pacific Coast League doubles title and made the finals of doubles at the CIF-SS individual tournament playing with Shane Korber.
Gavin Krogius, Santa Margarita, senior
The captain and team MVP, Krogius played No. 1 singles and helped Santa Margarita earn the Trinity League title. He was a singles finalist in the league tournament and advanced to the Round of 16 at the CIF-SS individual tournament. He also made the quarterfinals in singles at Ojai.
Curtis Wu, Valencia, senior
Valencia’s top singles player, Wu was a big contributor as the Tigers reached their second consecutive CIF-SS Division final. Wu advanced to the semifinals in doubles at Ojai playing with Jonathan Hammel. The pair also won the Empire League doubles title and reached the semifinals of the CIF-SS individual tournament in doubles.
Jonathan Hammel, Valencia, sophomore
Playing No. 2 singles, Hammel helped Valencia earn another Empire League title. He also was key in helping the Tigers make it back to the Division 3 final. He also made the semifinals at Ojai playing with Curtis Wu. They won the Empire League doubles title and advanced to the doubles semifinals of the CIF-SS individual tournament.
COACH OF THE YEAR
John Kessler, University
Kessler guided University to a dominating victory in the CIF-SS Division 1 championship match. The team’s performance earned Kessler the Register’s boys tennis coach of the year for 2010. His motto for success is simple: “It’s the person first, the student second and the player third,” he said.
