OCVarsity preview for the 2015 season:

SERVITE FRIARS

Coach: Scott Meyer

Last season: 5-7 overall, 1-4 league

Scouting report: Coach Scott Meyer is the Friars’ third coach in four years. He coached Corona del Mar to CIF championships in 2011, ’12 and ’13. Meyer replaces A.J. Gass, who is coaching at Garces Memorial in Bakersfield. Servite looks to be in rebuilding mode, with only two returning starters on offense and three returning starters on defense. Talent is there, especially at the skill positions, which includes Terrell Bynum at receiver. The greatest skill players in the world can’t do their thing without a good offensive line, and that’s where Servite might be questionable going into the season. The Friars have two of the county’s better defensive players in safety Keyon Riley and linebacker Sammy Duarte. “We’re pretty inexperienced,” Meyer said. “But I like the way our guys have come together and how they’re playing together as a team.” The new players on defense and offense must play together at a high level for Servite to succeed against a typically tough nonleague schedule and the equally rugged Trinity League.

Bottom line: Servite would win the championship of 90 percent of the leagues in Southern California, but the Friars might be a last-place team in the Trinity League.

Players to watch: Terrell Bynum, WR, Jr.; Sammy Duarte, LB, Sr.; Keyon Riley, DB, Sr.; Jackson Taylor, RB, Sr.; Tre Webb, DB, Sr.
