SANTA ANA – Santa Ana Valley struck early Friday night in a season-opening game against Segerstrom.

On the game’s second play from scrimmage, quarterback Edgar Astorga threw a pass to tight end Fernando Parada, who scampered 78 yards for a touchdown.

The Falcons were pretty much in control the rest of the way, defeating the Jaguars, 28-14, in a nonleague game at Segerstrom in the first regular-season meeting between the two teams.

“I was looking around and I was about to run and then I saw Fernando, my tight end, who was wide open, and I just lobbed it to him,” said Astorga. “He just did the rest.

“A couple years ago they beat us pretty bad (in the playoffs) so it feels great to come back.”

Santa Ana Valley also got a strong performance from running back Evert Roca, who rushed for 126 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns. Roca’s 35-yard touchdown run with six minutes left in the second quarter put the Falcons ahead, 21-7.

“It was a very good win to open the season,” said Santa Ana Valley coach Larry Mohr. “We haven’t even started school yet so I think the school will be buzzing a little bit. It’s pretty exciting.

“Our defense came up with the big plays. We’re going to have a good football team.”

Segerstrom got a spark in the first quarter from Denilson Santamaria, who returned a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown.

The Jaguars also got a solid performance from sophomore quarterback Marcos Avalos, who passed for 186 yards.

But Segerstrom fumbled the ball away twice and turned the ball over on an interception.

“We just had too many mistakes,” said Segerstrom coach Mike Maceranka. “You can’t turn the ball over and win football games. We didn’t play to our level of expectations tonight.

“We kept shooting ourselves in the foot. If we shoot ourselves in the foot, we can’t beat anybody. We got to be better about taking care of our side of the ball.”
