Fundamental victory a first for Godinez
SANTA ANA – Godinez came into the fourth installment of the Fundamental Bowl looking for its first win over cross-town rival Segerstrom.
Behind a boisterous crowd draped in black and yellow and eager to celebrate, the Grizzlies finally beat the Jaguars, 22-16, Friday night at Segerstrom High.
Zachary Huizar scored three touchdowns for Godinez and Aaron Raya carried the ball 32 times for 154 yards.
Godinez jumped to a 16-0 in the first-quarter lead behind an opportunistic defense that pounced on a fumble on the first play from scrimmage.
After the takeaway and four consecutive runs by Ronnie Trujillo, Huizar plunged into the end zone from 1 yard.
It was an early indication of how things would go for Segerstrom, which committed three turnovers.
Segerstrom answered late in the first quarter when Jacob Plascencia led the Jaguars on a four-play, 69-yard scoring drive to make the score 16-6.
The only score of the third quarter came when Omar Navarro broke loose for a 47-yard touchdown run cutting the Grizzlies' lead to 16-13 with 2:53 left. Navarro finished with 127 rushing yards.
In the fourth quarter with the Grizzlies nursing their lead, Raya lost a fumble deep in Jaguars territory, but the turnover didn't prove costly. Godinez forced a turnover on downs that gave it the ball back at the Segerstrom 21.
Huizar added his third score of the night three plays later for a 22-13 lead.
Adrian Avila's 39-yard field goal trimmed Segerstrom's deficit with 4:13 left.
