CdM boys, Mater Dei girls earn top seeds in lacrosse playoffs

Corona del Mar's boys and Mater Dei's girls are the top seeds for the Southern Section Lacrosse Championships.

CdM, which advanced to the O.C. semifinals last year, will host 16th-seeded Yorba Linda in the first round. CdM lost one game all season, 9-8 in overtime against Torrey Pines.

Mater Dei is top seed in the girls bracket. The Monarchs, who went undefeated during the regular season, open the playoffs against Great Oak of Temecula.

All first-round games are Tuesday, followed by the second round on Thursday. The O.C. semifinals are Saturday at Irvine High. The county finals are May 11, tentatively set for Trabuco Hills High, followed by the Southern Section finals, May 14 at Valencia.

In the boys playoffs, Foothill is the second seed and will host Santiago of Corona. Defending O.C. and Southern Section champion St. Margaret’s is the third seed and will host Servite.

JSerra, which advanced to the county finals last season, is the 12th seed. The Lions graduated 16 seniors from last season.

“If you want to win something, you have to beat everybody along the way at some point,” JSerra coach Brendan Fowler said. “If we can play our best and put things together, then we have a good chance to upset somebody.”

In the girls playoffs, St. Margaret’s, Foothill and Corona del Mar are seeded second through fourth, respectively. Foothill is the defending champion. The Knights will face 14th-seeded San Clemente in the first round.
