OCVarsity’s preview for the 2015 season:

MARINA VIKINGS

Coach: Jeff Turley

Last season: 0-10, 0-5

Scouting report: Coach Jeff Turley believes the Vikings will be improved in his second season after coming over from Long Beach Poly. He called 2014 “very humbling” but believes the Vikings have a better direction. Part of his optimism stems from an offseason featuring spring tryouts to find committed players and reaching the finals of the Santa Fe passing tournament. The emergence of junior running back Cooper Malerstein (6-0, 175) is another positive. He earned first-team all-league honors last fall. Basketball player Ethan Young (6-1, 185) also sparked the team by joining as a wide receiver. The Vikings have developed a pair of defensive standouts in end Caleb Hart and linebacker Max Melfie, both second-team all-league picks last season as juniors. Defense remains a concern. League opponents averaged 56.4 points against Marina last season as the squad’s Sunset losing streak stretched to 51 games.

Bottom line: The Vikings need to build their confidence and finding the win column in the nonleague schedule could help the squad be more competitive in league. The nonleague trek, however, won’t be easy with dates against San Juan Hills and Aliso Niguel.

Players to watch: Anthony De La Torre, QB, Sr.; Caleb Hart, DE, Sr.; Noah Holmes, WR/CB, Jr.; Cooper Malerstein, RB/S, Jr.; Max Melfie, LB/TE/FB, Sr.; Ethan Young, WR/S, Sr.
