OCVarsity preview for the 2015 season:
EDISON CHARGERS
Coach: Dave White
Last season: 7-4 overall, 4-1 league
Scouting report: The Chargers are loaded with offensive skill players and appear improved in the passing game. They return eight starters on offense led by quarterback Grant Lowary and wide receiver Garrett White. Lowary finished last season strong and should surpass his 2014 passing total of 1,606 yards and 16 TDs. White, a Yale commit, was one of the county’s best receivers in the summer and should easily exceed his 39-reception output from last season. Center Mike Saffell and wide receiver Jacob Price also are all-league returners and running back Jacob Marines (529 yards) will keep defenses honest. Edison’s defense features less experience with just two returning starters. Price, an outside linebacker, and newcomer Sosefo Mailangi (6-4, 250) at defensive end are key players. Mailangi, a senior, is a former Marina transfer who was ineligible last season. Cornerback Gasper Atencio also showed improvement over the summer.
Bottom line: The Chargers allowed at least 30 points in their four losses last season, so if they improve defensively, they could win a few more games. Their offense looks that good.
Players to watch: Gasper Atencio, CB, Sr.; Grant Lowary, QB, Sr.; Sosefo Mailangi, OT/DE, Sr.; Jacob Price, LB/WR, Sr.; Mike Saffell, C, Jr.; Garrett White, WR, Sr.
