Irvine will try to get the most out of Curtis Jackson’s talents this season. He was a standout on defense in 2014, and this season the Vaqueros will use him on offense as a slot receiver.

OCVarsity’s team preview for the 2015 season:

IRVINE VAQUEROS

Coach: Erik Terry

Last season: 6-5 overall, 2-3 in league

Scouting report: The Vaqueros qualified for the playoffs as an at-large team last season, but they should be able to contend for one of the guaranteed berths this season. Irvine returns seven starters on defense and five on offense. Senior receiver Josh Gray scored 11 total touchdowns last season. It should be interesting to see how Curtis Jackson is used on offense. He is set to play one of the slot positions. On defense, Jackson recorded 121 tackles a year ago at free safety. Quarterback Joseph Carter moves up from JV, and having players like Gray and Jackson around him will certainly help his development. The Vaqueros will need the four new starters on the offensive line to jell quickly. Irvine’s defense looks to be set with the return of Jackson and some other leading tacklers.

Bottom line: If the transition goes smoothly at quarterback and the offensive line continues to develop, the Vaqueros have the ingredients to contend for the league title.

Players to watch: Hayden Castro, DT, Sr.; Josh Gray, WR, Sr.; Curtis Jackson, WR/FS, Sr.; Brent Miller, RB/SS, Jr.; Ben Roznos, OLB, Sr.; Vincent Sandoval, OLB, Sr.
