OCVarsity preview for the 2015 season:

RANCHO ALAMITOS VAQUEROS

Coach: Mike Enright

Last season: 11-3 overall; 3-2 in league

Scouting report: The Vaqueros made a memorable run to the Southern Division final a year ago. That team finished third in the Garden Grove League. There will be a lot of new faces on offense – nine, possibly 10 new starters taking the field. Junior Blake Culbert replaces record-setting quarterback Nick Brown. Joe Navar (57 receptions, 661 yards, seven TDs) is the lone returner at wide receiver. Justin Kanyavong earned first team all-league honors at running back. The outlook is a bit brighter on defense (five starters are back) Saiui Tiliaia earned first-team all-league honors on defense last season and will be looked to anchor the unit this season. Robert Tran recorded 132 tackles last season and defensive tackle Frankie Gonzalez had four sacks.

Bottom line: The Vaqueros might take a bit of a hit early in the season as the new pieces settle in, but once league play rolls around they should have enough to get back to the playoffs.

Players to watch: Siuai Tiliaia, DE, Jr.; Frankie Gonzalez, DT, Jr.; Robert Tran, ILB, Sr.; Justin Kanyavong, RB, Sr.; Joe Navar, WR, Sr.; Arturo Salazar, DB, Sr.
