OCVarsity preview for the 2015 season:

BOLSA GRANDE MATADORS

Coach: Matt Brinkerhoff

Last season: 1-9 overall, 1-4 league

Scouting report: The Matadors haven’t won more than one league game in a season since 2011, but they hope to take a step toward becoming a playoff contender. To do that this season, third-year coach Matt Brinkerhoff hopes to capitalize on the excitement building in the program. Cristian Najera and Andrew Guillen bring speed to the running back position, and the wide receiver positions look solidifed with Isaiah Moore and Julian Elias. Senior Eduardo Arreola is set at quarterback. Overall team strength and depth is a concern.

Bottom line: Bolsa Grande probably isn’t ready to contend for the league title, but if it keeps its key two-way players healthy and gets some breaks, a playoff berth could be in striking distance.

Players to watch: Cristian Najera, RB/MLB, Jr.; Isaiah Moore, WR/SS, Jr.; Eduardo Arreola, QB, Sr.; Andy Le, DB, Sr.
