OCVarsity preview for the 2015 season:
FULLERTON INDIANS
Coaches: Ed De Avila and Gus Martinez
Last season: 5-6 overall, 2-3 league
Scouting report: The Indians quarterback competition continued deep into summer, as both Demetrius Perry and transfer Jordan Lawton (Long Beach Millikan) have had their moments under center, making the decision a difficult one for coaches Gus Martinez and Ed De Avila. “We think both these guys can be just as good – if not better – than some of the talented guys we’ve had here in the past,” Martinez said. Whoever winds up starting will benefit from a veteran backfield starring seniors Ryan Rains and Marcus Roberson, who each saw extended action and played well last season. Fullerton returns only eight starters from 2014 – lowest amongst the Freeway League teams – but with 15 of their slated starters being seniors, optimism remains high. “This is probably the best Freeway League we’ve seen in years, if not ever,” Martinez said. “We fully expect to be in the mix, so we’re going after everybody.”
Bottom line: Keep an eye on the quarterback play, which could determine if the Indians are legitimate postseason contenders again this season.
