OCVarsity preview for the 2015 season:
EL MODENA VANGUARDS
Coach: Ed Drzanek
Last season: 5-8 overall, 1-2 league
Scouting report: As Vanguards coach Ed Drzanek said, “Everything’s a little bit easier when you have a guy like Kenneth Lamb on your team.” The senior running back highlights an El Modena offense that returns eight starters, including fellow tailback Dillon Keefe who also had a 100-yard rushing performance in last season’s run to the Southern Division semifinals. Having been thrust into the starting role as a sophomore, quarterback Garrett Gramm returns with valuable playing experience under his belt and should continue to develop as a passer a season after tossing more interceptions than touchdowns. Toss in playmaking linebacker Clint Wodark and seven returners on defense and there’s plenty for El Modena to be optimistic about this season. Depth is the one area of concern for Drzanek, who expects a handful of sophomores to see playing time this season.
Bottom line: If the Vanguards can navigate their way back into the playoffs, they will again be a tough opponent in the Southern Division.
Players to watch: Garrett Gramm, QB, Jr.; Dillon Keefe, RB/DE, Jr.; Kenneth Lamb, RB, Sr.; Gio Peralta, LB, Jr.; Clint Wodark, TE/LB, Sr.
