OCVarsity’s season preview for 2015:
VILLA PARK SPARTANS
Coach: Dusan Ancich
Last season: 9-3 overall, 3-0 league
Scouting report: The Spartans receiving corps is special. Coach Dusan Ancich calls it the best he has ever coached. The running game is solid too, especially having a workhorse of a back in Ramon Chaves who can run over defenders. The quarterback, however, is unproven. Junior Nick Sipe enters the season with just two starts under his belt, but the 6-4, 190-pounder possesses a big arm and has the team’s coaches confident in his ability to lead this team to another league championship after a strong summer. With playmakers like defensive tackle Shane Darsow, linebacker John Stamos and safety Lance Vecchio manning every level of defense, Villa Park will again put out a stingy unit that should generate a number of turnovers.
Bottom line: With weapons galore on the outside, all eyes will be on Sipe and his development throughout the season. A league championship and another deep playoff run are more than feasible if the youngster gets better every week.
Players to watch: Brennan Corbin, WR, Sr.; Ramon Chaves, RB/LB, Sr.; Jake Ruiz, WR/CB, Sr.; Nick Sipe, QB, Jr.; John Stamos, FB/LB, Jr.; Lance Vecchio, WR/S, Sr.
