Capistrano Valley’s girls lacrosse team held a two-goal lead at halftime against Aliso Niguel, which wasn’t much of a comfort zone for a team trying to complete a perfect regular season and capture the Sea View League championship.

The Cougars have relied heavily on senior star Riley Eggeman all season, and it was more of the same in the second half.

Eggeman exploded for four of her six goals in the second half to lead Capistrano Valley to a 10-6 victory Thursday that secured both accomplishments – the league title and the perfect season.

“We wanted it more this year,” Cougars coach Ryan Gustafson said. “That was our No. 1 goal coming into the season, was to win an outright league title, and I think that’s the first step. We’ve got that goal taken care of.”

Capistrano Valley suffered two tough losses to Aliso Niguel last season, which kept the Cougars from claiming the title.

Capistrano Valley, which finished 8-0 in Sea View play, will head into the playoffs with a 15-0 record. The Cougars will try to improve upon their quarterfinal appearance from 2013.

Other than Eggeman’s usual heroics, Alex Yan was one of Capistrano Valley’s key cogs, as she recorded 12 saves.

Eggeman scored the first three goals of the second half for the Cougars. Erica Smith added another, and Eggeman’s fourth goal pushed Capistrano Valley’s lead to six. Courtney Smith also played a large role with two scores.

Emily Grimes and Kendra Ziegler each scored two goals apiece for the Wolverines (9-6, 6-2). Aliso Niguel also received strong play from goalie Claire Laughery.
