Segerstrom passes coach's test in victory

Special to OCVarsity.com

SANTA ANA - In his squad’s nonleague finale, Segerstrom coach Mike Maceranka wanted to see his offense execute.

His Jaguars responded Friday night. Scoring three times in its first five plays, Segerstrom posted a 40-12 victory over visiting Calvary Chapel.

With the victory, the Jaguars enter  Golden West League play Oct. 16 with a 3-2 record. Those two losses were close games with Laguna Hills and Tehachapi, the two top-ranked teams in the division.

"We played a tough schedule by design, so it would get us ready for league play,"Maceranka said.  "We simply wanted to execute our offense tonight.”

That the Jaguars did, scoring on their first play on a 67-yard pass from Brian Murrieta to Nicolaus Powell-Calhoun to open a 27-point first  quarter.

After a fumble recovery by Ricardo Cachua, Matt Navarro scored from 15 yards out. Francisco Partida added scoring runs of 30 and 15 yards to end the quarter.

With a 33-0 halftime lead, the coaches agreed to let the clock run continuously in the second half.

The Eagles (2-3) got on the board with a 17-yard pass from Tikey  Mahlow to Kevin Schick. Mahlow later added a 1-yard scoring run.

Travis Williamson capped Segerstrom’s scoring with a 1-yard run.
