Olympian Courtney Mathewson (Canyon) and Laguna Beach senior Makenzie Fischer each scored three goals in regulation and once in shootouts to help the U.S. women’s water polo team beat Australia, 12-10, in the finals of the FINA Intercontinental Tournament in Auckland, New Zealand.
The U.S. defense and Newport Harbor goalie Carlee Kapana (six saves) held Australia to a 0 for 10 effort on the power-play.
U.S. center Kami Craig and Fischer, The Register’s two-time player of the year, were selected all-tournament. Fischer, a senior, will defer her enrollment at Stanford to train with the national team.
The U.S. team also included Fischer’s sister, Aria, ex-Corona del Mar standout Maddie Musselman and former Newport Harbor and USC standout Kaleigh Gilchrist. Aria Fischer and Gilchrist each scored once in the final.
The scored was tied, 8-8, after regulation but Team USA won the shootout, 4-2.
